STAMPEDE JOHN STENBRATEN

by Jane Gaffin

According to Yukon Places and Names (2nd edition, 2003) by R.C. "Bob" Coutts, Mount Stenbraten, near the headwaters of the Stewart River, was officially named in May, 1973, after John O. "Stampede" Stenbraten, a noted Yukon prospector between the years 1904 to 1960.

"Stampede" John supposedly took part in nearly every mining rush in the Yukon, Alaska and even went into Siberia during those years, thus the reason for his nickname.

Mr. Stenbraten predeceased his wife Doris McMurphy Stenbraten, a long-time Yukon English teacher, who died on July 18, 1999.

A John & Doris Stenbraten Memorial Fund was established with the Yukon Foundation by bequest for a) A scholarship or project related to mining in the Yukon; b) A scholarship for studies in animal husbandry; c) A project related to animal welfare in Yukon; or d) a Yukoner writing or publishing a work related to Yukon.
